Is it compulsory for your passport?

The obligation follows citizenship, not the city where you file the papers. Russia asks for a policy from nationals of countries that ask the same of Russians. Everyone else may skip it at the consulate, though the medical reasons for buying one do not change.

Not required by the consulate, but strongly recommended. Your home country’s insurance won’t cover you in Russia. We recommend taking out a local policy — it only takes 5 minutes.

* Rules shift and your consulate has the final word. Checked against consular pages in .

The same policy is your visa document

If your nationality obliges you to attach insurance to the application, this certificate is what you attach. Five points decide whether a visa officer accepts it.

Consular requirements for a travel medical policy and how the six insurers on Turinsure meet them
Requirement Why it matters All 6 insurers on Turinsure
Sum insured of at least EUR 30,000 Some missions want euros on the page, others the ruble equivalent Both figures are printed on the certificate
Valid across the whole Russian Federation A worldwide policy from a Western insurer usually carves Russia out in the exclusions Territory line reads Russian Federation
Covers the full period of stay A single uncovered day is enough to send the application back Dates match what you entered, and we re-issue free if they change
Issued by an insurer licensed in Russia A foreign insurer cannot transfer money to a Russian clinic in practice All six hold a Bank of Russia licence
Repatriation included Named directly in the consular checklists Covered up to the sum insured

What you can actually use it for

This is an emergency medical programme, not a comprehensive health plan. Below is what the assistance service will arrange for you in Russia. The core is identical across the six insurers, only some limits move.

  • Seeing a doctor

An appointment at a partner clinic, plus the diagnostics and lab tests the doctor orders.

    Up to the sum insured

  • Staying in hospital

Urgent inpatient care, an operation if it cannot wait, and the ward while you recover.

    Up to the sum insured

  • A doctor coming to you

A call-out to your hotel or flat when you are too unwell to travel to the clinic.

    Included

  • Medicines

What the treating doctor prescribes for the episode you were treated for.

    Included

  • Dental emergencies

Sudden pain, an abscess, or a tooth broken in an accident. Not check-ups or planned work.

    EUR 200 to 300

  • Getting you to care

An ambulance and transport to the clinic where you will be treated.

    Up to the sum insured

  • Repatriation

Repatriation of remains. Consulates list this explicitly among their requirements.

    Up to the sum insured

  • Infections picked up on the trip

Treatment of an acute infectious illness that begins while you are in Russia.

    Included

Ordering takes about four minutes

  1. Dates and ages

The days you will be in Russia, and how old each traveller is. Nothing else affects the price.

  2. Pick a quote

Six prices appear together. They differ in cost and dental limit, not in whether the consulate takes them.

  3. Passport data

Latin spelling exactly as in the passport, date of birth, an e-mail address. No uploads, no scans.

  4. Card payment

Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay. Your bank does not need to be Russian.

  5. Certificate arrives

By e-mail, and it stays in your personal account for the whole trip in case you need it again.

What travellers ask our support line

Turinsure is a broker. Who actually pays if I am hospitalised?

The insurer whose quote you chose pays, not Turinsure. All six hold a Bank of Russia licence and run a 24/7 assistance service. Turinsure issues the certificate and keeps it in your personal account, but the risk and the payment sit with the insurance company named on the document.

Do I hand my card over at the clinic?

No. Call the assistance number printed on your certificate first, and the assistance service arranges the visit and settles with the clinic directly. If an emergency forces you to pay before you can call, notify the assistance company and keep the invoices.

What if I fall ill outside Moscow or St Petersburg?

The partner clinic networks cover more than 60 Russian cities, Kazan and Sochi among them. Call the same assistance number: the operator names the nearest partner clinic or sends a doctor to where you are staying.

My European insurer says I am covered worldwide. Is that enough?

Usually not. Most Western worldwide policies carve Russia out in the exclusions, and a foreign insurer cannot transfer money to a Russian clinic in practice. Consulates ask for a policy from an insurer licensed in Russia, with the territory line reading Russian Federation.

How long do I stay covered, and what starts the cover?

Cover runs for the dates printed on the certificate and has to span your whole stay. A single uncovered day is enough to send a visa application back. If your dates change, we re-issue the certificate free.

I’m going to Russia 3 times this year. Cheaper option?

Yes, an annual policy. You choose how many insured days you need for the year, and the price per day falls the longer the term. Pick the annual option in the quote form instead of single-trip dates.

Where do I find my certificate a month later?

In your personal account, which is created automatically after purchase. The PDF stays there in English and Russian for the whole policy period, and it is also in the e-mail sent when the policy was issued.

Something is spelled wrong on the certificate. Now what?

Write to support with the policy number and the correct spelling. The Latin spelling has to match the passport exactly, so we re-issue the certificate. Corrections made before the trip are free.

Country notes for travellers

What your consulate asks for, whether the e-visa is open to your passport, and the practical details of travelling to Russia on it.

Using the policy once you are here

The mistake foreign travellers make is walking into the nearest hospital and paying at reception. Russian clinics bill the assistance service directly, but only if the assistance service knows about you first. So the call comes before the clinic.

  1. Ring the 24/7 assistance line printed on your certificate and give the policy number.

  2. The operator speaks English. They will either send a doctor to where you are staying or name the partner clinic to go to.

  3. If you have to pay a bill in an emergency, please notify the assistance company.

All about insurance for a visa to Russia
Ask ten travellers what the hardest part of a Russian visa is, and nine will say "the invitation letter". They're wrong. The invitation is paperwork. The thing that quietly kills applications is the insurance policy — one missing line, one vague word, and your file comes back across the counter with a polite shrug.
